Capoeira's history begins with the beginning of African slavery in Brazil. Since the 16th century, Portuguese colonists began exporting slaves to their colonies, coming mainly from Angola. In order to build up their mental and physical strengt the slaves found a way they could train themselves in disguise from the slave owners. By using instruments, clapping, and singing with participants it was perceived as a form of entertainment.
In 1974 Capoeira was recognized as a national sport in Brazil.
Capoeira combines martial arts, game strategy, dance movements as a method of self defense. All together, these movements will increase your flexibility, endurance and alertness. It is a great form of exercise and is appropriate for all ages!
